Hackspace Members Meeting : Monday 2nd October 2017

Apologies

Finance

  • We’ve got 2200 in the bank
  • Haven’t paid the VAT rebate yet
  • Our balance trend is trending downwards at the moment
    • Still paying that debt back
    • At the end of the month we’ll be getting some more money in
  • In terms of membership we’re up to 56 members
    • Men’s sheds has brought a few new members in
    • We’ve spent a small amount of money on advertising and we’ve not heard anything
      • We’ve actually got a few more members from it as of late though!
    • Haven’t lost any members
  • CIF Bid
    • Community investment fund
    • A huge fund that will help us stay open during the days
    • Terms of the bid are as follows:
      • It’s based on a community contribution
      • What we already do in the space in volunteer hours, equipment
        • Matched funding we could get 300k+ to last over 3 year
    • Plan to do business incubation
      • This will be a good stream of income
      • Rent space out
      • Provide services and knowledge from members
    • Educational talks
    • Providing for the community – men’s sheds, get people in for workshops etc.
    • Work closely with schools to provide an extension of their curriculum
    • Still in the air yet
  • The spinners mill
    • A huge building
    • We might get the second floor which is warm
    • Completely open plan
    • Developed heritage side with reconditioned engine
    • Planned to be finished for April next year
    • Spinners organization will manage fitting it out
    • Different floors for different things

Events

  • Sewing class
    • Was a huge success
    • Yvonne has done a fantastic job
    • Next one sold out within 3 hours!
    • Four waiting for the next one
    • Yvonne happy to continue
  • Deal conference
    • Aimed at local authorities
    • How Wigan has dealt with austerity
    • Commitment from a lot of people
      • Some people were skeptic
      • Lots of positivity though
  • Joining communities
    • Something to get the unemployed back into work
    • They go for a walk to Hackspace, learning digital things
    • Some people want jobs out of it
    • Really positive
  • Upcoming events:
    • Open Mic night - next saturday night
      • Got a few people joining in, live bands, etc
      • We’ve got enough to fill the night
    • Ebay day / mending cafe - next saturday day
      • Shift a load of stuff that’s taking space
      • Get a few people in to help out or fix things
    • Get online week

      • Joining Communities taking part
      • We’ve got funding
      • Get people introduced to a few things on the computers
      • Getting people doing things digitally
        • i.e. send an email, internet shopping, internet banking
        • People who haven’t done anything before
        • People who are less experienced

      • Badges and levels of awards for digital activities
    • Half term hac(kid)space - 24th October
      • Papermaking and other activities
    • Environmental jam - 4th November
      • Like a raspberry jam but with an environmental twist
    • Christmas Makers Market - 25th November
      • Last one was successful
      • Get more people in
      • Selling more christmassy things
      • Anyone that is a maker, point in our direction
    • Games night - Last saturday of the month
      • Come down and play games
      • Card games
      • Video games
      • Board games
    • Quiz night - Second saturday of the month

Comms

  • Website progress
    • Paul and Katie are talking about bits of the website
    • In need of a revamp
    • In talks with a few web guys we know

      • Code improvements
    • There are plenty of options
      • We’ve got a few helping hands

    • Hosting wise - WPEngine
      • We’ve got an offer for hosting for between 5-10 pounds a month
      • Malicious code prevention
      • Spam and DDOS protection
      • Keeps it all maintained and updated
  • Newsletter
    • Pretty well recieved
    • We’re getting the hang of it
    • Trying to do it regularly
    • Next one going out next week
    • A few little style improvements necessary

Operations

  • Space cleanliness
    • LEAVE THE SPACE BETTER THAN YOU FIND IT
      • Please please please tidy up a little bit!
      • People spending time cleaning other people’s mess
      • Hoovering, tidying up, etc, makes things easier for everyone!
      • We’ve got a can crusher now – it’s fun!
    • Washing up bowl has gone out of sink
      • No more things left overnight
      • A little cleaner
    • Kitchen bin needs emptying more often
  • Roof update
    • No leaks thus far
    • We’ve still got a roof over our head
    • If you spot any leaks please let us know!
  • Men’s shed
    • It’s really taken off
    • We’ve got a few new members from it
    • Tools are getting sorted, workshop tidied and made better
    • We’ve got men’s shed days going on - Monday and Wednesday afternoons
      • Learn to make things
      • Learn the tools, speak with others in the trade or are knowledgable
